The Quest for Rest
Today’s photo was taken a day after Moose’s surgery, with a protective sleeve on his leg and fentanyl patch on his shoulder, marking the beginning of a long recovery period during which he cannot run, jump, climb stairs, or play with the other dogs.
He is gated out of certain areas to prevent him from jumping on furniture or climbing stairs, and he is gated into areas for confinement from the other dogs so they cannot play with him or disturb his incisions. Keeping all of this up requires constant vigilance and care.
Additionally, there are multiple appointments each week for injections, laser treatments, post-operative checks, and X-rays. All of this is taking place alongside my own recovery, which is ongoing. I’m also on a strict rest protocol and have many post-op appointments to attend.
While I’m exhausted from all of this resting, six years of strength training has taught me how important rest is to healing and getting stronger. The term “resting” is a bit of a misnomer as it implies an inactive state, when in fact, our bodies are working hard at the healing process.
Moose and I aren’t resting. We’re just getting ready for our comebacks.
