A no-brainer

I woke up restless today. That feeling you get when you’re raring to go but don’t know where you’re going. Other than a quick errand, the day was free and the weather was beautiful, a lucky combination, especially for February.

I left the house without a plan and ran through the possibilities in my head while I completed my errand. Still undecided, I realized this was one of those situations where my brain was getting in the way so I decided to stop thinking about it and just drive.

I noticed the entrance to Pointe Mouillee about 100 yards ahead, a dirt road wedged between a VFW building and a small residential area. Easily missed if you’re not paying attention. But I’m paying attention today, and just as I reached the entrance, I made the abrupt decision to turn the wheel and head in.

And just like that, I’m all in. Sometimes, the best decisions are made without thinking.

This is my first visit to this vast State Game Area, over 7,000 acres of protected marshland along Lake Erie. Now inside, I feel like I’m hundreds of miles away from the urbanized area I just drove through, and I’m wondering why I’ve never visited before.

I’ve got a mean case of plantar fasciitis that started a few weeks ago, but I don’t need to walk far to enjoy the expansive view of the water or the surprising beauty of a winter landscape. I parked at the wildlife viewing area and focused my camera on unobscured views of the water and sky, as well as marshland landscape and waterfowl.

After taking my shots, I lingered in the chill vibe of this quiet sanctuary, envisioning sunrises and sunsets, and the changing landscape in spring, summer and fall. I headed home, happy I made the abrupt turn into the park, my restlessness transformed to a relaxed state of mind.

I’ll be back here soon.
